A 55-year-old Woodbridge man had initially been accused of blowing a red light in a Ford F-150 pickup truck, killing passenger, 30-year-old Eric Kuhn on April 29 at the intersection of Old Bridge Drive and Colby Drive in Woodbridge, Prince William County police said.
However, that man named 33-year-old Austin Michael Woolf, of Fredericksburg, as the true driver, and testing of DNA evidence proved that Woolf was actually the driver behind the wheel at the time of the crash — not the 55-year-old man, county police said on Thursday, Nov. 2.
On May 3, as Kuhn was fighting in the hospital, Woolf shared a GoFundMe launched for Kuhn's family on Facebook. He captioned the post, "Please take a moment to donate and share."
"Initial information given by Woolf to police at the time of the crash in April contributed to the false identification of the driver previously sought in the investigation," police said in a release.
Arrest warrants for the initial suspect were recalled by the Prince William County Circuit Court, and the actual driver, Woolf, was subsequently arrested, authorities said.
Kuhn, a member of the Prince William Marina Team was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries following the crash. He died on May 19.
Woolf has been charged with reckless driving and filing a false police report. He was being held on $5,000 secured bond. Charges of felony hit and run and driving on a revoked license were dropped for the initial suspect.
